General Information

Trichocladus ellipticus is an evergreen shrub or a small tree; it usually grows up to 10 metres tall, occasionally reaching 18 metres. The bole can be up to 30cm in diameter[, ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of wood.

A bark decoction is added to soup or meat to improve digestion and to cure an upset stomach[, ].

Other Uses

The white wood is hard, tough and heavy, but bends easily. It hardens when heated and is considered to be termite resistant. It is used for construction, fencing, carpentry, tool handles and carvings. Larger boles are traditionally used as posts in buildings and smaller stems for cross poles[]. This species is the favourite tree of the Maasai people for making frames for their shields[, ].
The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal[, ].
