General Information

Swartzia pendula is a tree with an open crown and pendent branches, growing up to 6 metres tall. The cylindrical bole can be straight or contorted, often branching from low down though it can be clear for up to 3 metres[].
The wood is harvested from the wild.

Known Hazards

The sawdust from wood of plants in this genus can be irritating to mill workers[].

This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria; these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is purplish brown; the sapwood variable in colour from clear yellow to light brown with purplish streaks. The grain is straight or interwoven; texture fine, seasoned wood is odourless and tasteless. The wood is moderately heavy to heavy, tough, and strong, susceptible to insect attacks. It is not easy to work and takes a smooth polish[].
