This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria; these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[].

The heartwood is purplish brown; the sapwood variable in colour from clear yellow to light brown with purplish streaks. The grain is straight or interwoven; texture fine, seasoned wood is odourless and tasteless. The wood is moderately heavy to heavy, tough, and strong, susceptible to insect attacks. It is not easy to work and takes a smooth polish[
