Siparuna eggersii and Siparuna thecaphora (Poepp. & Endl.) A.DC., are very close morphologically, and it can be hard to distinguish them. However, the two species co-occur in western Ecuador without apparently losing their distinctness and so are maintained here as distinct[].

General Information

Siparuna eggersii is an evergreen shrub or small tree, often with a scrambling habit, growing 1.5 - 12 metres tall[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of materials.
Although widely distributed, Siparuna eggersii has not been recorded inside Ecuador’s protected areas network. It has experienced a massive alteration of its habitat since the mid 20th century. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2004)[].

Cultivation Details

All parts of the plant are aromatic. The fruits have a strong lemon smell[].
A dioecious species, both male and female forms must be grown if fruit and seed are required.

The boiled leaves serve to prepare a drink that is a remedy for stomach aches[]. The same concoction may be used against female sterility or as an aphrodisiac[].
The boiled leaves are used to prepare poultices against rheumatism[].
