General Information

Podocarpus smithii is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 metres tall[, ].
It is uncertain as to whether or not this tree is currently being utilized - the timber is of good quality.
Podocarpus smithii's extent of occurrence and area of occupancy fall well below the thresholds for Endangered, and there is no evidence for ongoing decline. Recent collecting has turned up specimens from previously unknown and unsuspected localities and further inventories are likely to produce new localities. However, it is acknowledged that the species is rare in its habitat. Despite this, without ongoing decline being plausible, it does not meet the criteria for a threatened category. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

Based on data from 10 collection localities, the climate preferences for Podocarpus smithii include a mean annual temperature of 21°c, with an average minimum in the coldest month of 17°c, and a mean annual precipitation of 2,320mm[].

A dioecious species; both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required.

No specific uses have been recorded although it may have been logged in the past as, like other members of the genus, the timber is of good quality[].
The timber of this species is useful and can be used for much the same purposes as Sundacarpus amara[].

Propagation

The seed can be sown at any time of the year in a sandy soil, though it is probably best sown as soon as it is ripe[]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on until large enough to plant out.
