Common Name: Jaboticaba Grauda

General Information

Jaboticaba grauda is an evergreen tree with a dense crown growing 4 - 8 metres tall[, ]. The crooked bole can be 20 - 30cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its fruit and wood. It is sometimes cultivated in domestic orchards for its fruit, which is consumed locally[].

Grows best in a shady position[]. Prefers a well-drained soil[].

Fruit - raw and made into sweets and jellies[]. A succulent, acidic pulp[]. The purplish-red fruit is around 2cm in diameter[].

The wood is irregular-grained, of average texture, moderately heavy, hard, slightly susceptible to wood eating organisms[]. It is only used to make tool handles[].
The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a short viability and so is best sown as soon as it is ripe. Sow in a semi-shaded position in a nursery seedbed. Germination rates can be 60% or more, with the seed sprouting within 25 - 35 days[]. The seedlings grow fairly slowly[].
