Phaeanthus vietnamensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow from 2 - 10 metres tall. The bole can be up to 15cm in diameter[, ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of materials.

The content of the main alkaloid, dimethylgrisabine, in dried plant material is 0.01%[].

Medicinal

Both the inner bark and the leaves are a traditional medicine for sore eyes[].
Aqueous extracts of the leaves have been used in Vietnamese folk medicine in the treatment of non-specific conjunctivitis and gastro-intestinal disorders, and for disinfection of wounds[].

The alkaloid extract of the leaves contains monomeric and dimeric isoquinoline alkaloids, and exhibits anti-microbial activity[].
The main alkaloid, dimethylgrisabine, showed a potent in vitro activity against Bacillus subtilis[].

Other Uses

The bark is used for tying purposes[].

The wood is used for light construction in houses etc[].
