Phaeanthus splendens is an evergreen shrub or tree that can grow rom 3.5 - 26 metres tall. The bole can be up to 29cm in diameter, sometimes with buttresses[, , ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and a source of materials.

Cultivation Details

Prefers sandy loam soils in the wild[], though it also grows on yellow clays, rocky and limestone soils[].
Plants can flower and produce fruit all year round[].
The flowers have a sweet, apple-like smell[].
Fresh leaves may yield 0.72% crude alkaloids, consisting of 0.09% limacine and 0.03% phaeantine. Total crude alkaloids found in the stem bark amount to 0.78%[].

Medicinal

Both the inner bark and the leaves are a traditional remedy for sore eyes[].
The plant is used in folk medicine to lower blood pressure[].
The leaves are used against eye and skin infections[].

The alkaloids limacine and phaeanthine, isolated from the plant, show a certain degree of antibacterial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. They were active against Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, whereas phaeanthine was also active against Staphylococcus aureus[].

Other Uses

The bark is used for making shoulder straps and for tying purposes[].

The wood is yellow to white[]. It is used for light construction - house beams etc[].
