Common Name: Coyo Avocado

General Information

Coyo avocado is a large-crowned, evergreen tree usually growing about 15 - 20 metres tall, but with some specimens reaching a height of 50 metres[, ]. Plants in some parts of its range lose their leaves during the dry season[].
The edible fruits are commonly gathered from the wild for local use and the trees are occasionally cultivated[, ]. A valued fruit, the trees are usually left when the forest is cleared and can be plentiful in pastures[]. The fruit is often seen in local markets during its brief season[].

Cultivation Details

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A rich, nutty flavour, though the pulp can be fibrous[]. The fruit varies greatly in quality, that of most wild trees being unpleasantly fibrous and having scant flesh. However, the flavour is so good that the fruit is much appreciated[]. Some trees have large fruits in which the fibre is not conspicuous[]. A good source of oil and minerals[]. The pear-shaped fruit is 5 - 10cm in diameter, weighing 150 - 900g[].
