General Information

Myrciaria guaquiea is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a small crown; it can grow 4 - 7 metres tall. The slightly crooked bole is 15 - 25cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its edible fruit, which is very popular locally. The wood is used locally for fuel.

Cultivation Details

Grows best in a sunny position[]. Although it grows best in a well-drained soil, the tree can tolerate temporary, short-lived inundation[].
Newly planted young trees grow away quite slowly[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A succulent, acidulous pulp[]. The yellow fruit is a globose berry 20 - 25mm in diameter containing 1 - 2 relatively large seeds[].

Other Uses

The wood is straight-grained, fine-textured, moderately heavy, moderately resistant to wood eating organisms[]. It is only available in small dimensions and so is limited in use to items such as tool handles[].
The wood is used for fuel[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a short viability and so is best sown as soon as it is ripe. Sow in a semi-shaded position in a nursery seedbed. Germination rates are around 50%, with the seed sprouting within 120 - 180 days[]. The seedlings grow away quite slowly[].
