Until 2003, plants of Kandelia occurring in E China and Japan were included within Kandelia Candel (L.) Druce, which is now recognized as an allopatric species ranging from E India to Borneo[].

Kandelia obovata is an evergreen tree usually growing from 1 - 3 metres tall, occasionally to 8 metres[].
This species was considered to be part of Kandelia candel until 2003. The uses attributed to that species of being a source of tannins and fuel almost certainly also apply to this species[].
