A plant of the tropics, where it is found at elevations from metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 27 - 35°c, but can tolerate 12 - 40°c[
]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 2,500 - 3,500mm, but tolerates 2,000 - 5,000mm[
].
Young trees are very tolerant of shade but become more light-demanding as they grow larger[
]. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 6, tolerating 4.5 - 6.9[
