Other Uses
The heartwood is grey-brown; it is clearly demarcated from the pinkish-brown sapwood. The texture is fine; grain irregular; lustre medium to low; seasoned wood has a mild, pleasant odour but no distinctive taste; growth rings are marked by narrow darker bands. The wood is very hard, heavy, tough, strong, with variable durability (the darker coloured specimens being more durable) and very susceptible to attack by dry-wood termites. Rate of air-seasoning and amount of degrade are moderate. Machining characteristics are as follows: planing and mortising are good; shaping, turning, and boring are excellent; sanding is poor unless fine grades of abrasive are used; and resistance to screw splitting is very poor - preboring is essential. An attractive wood, its uses include general construction, crossties, oxcart tongues, poles, and posts. It is also suitable for furniture, cabinetwork, turnery, carving, interior trim, tool handles, farm implements, and boatbuilding[
