General Information

Eugenia sprengelii is an evergreen shrub or tree with a dense, pyramidal crown; it can grow up to 6 metres tall. The bole is generally crooked, around 15 - 25cm in diameter[].
The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a food and source of wood. Very ornamental, but rarely used in the garden because of its slow growth. It is sometimes grown for topiary and is also grown in pots as an indoor plant[].

Cultivation Details

Prefers a position in dappled shade, and is intolerant of full sun[]. Prefers a well-drained soil[].
A very slow growing plant, only reaching a height of 50cm within 2 years from seed[].
Plants commence fruiting when about 5 - 6 years old, at a height of less than 2 metres[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw. A succulent, sweetish pulp[]. The reddish to purple, globose fruit is up to 9mm in diameter, containing a single seed[].

Other Uses

The wood is fine-textured, straight-grained, moderately heavy, easy to cut. It is generally too small for most purposes other than items such as tool handles[].
The wood is used for fuel[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A germination rate of more than 70 % can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 15 - 25 days[].
