Common Name:

General Information

Eugenia sonderiana is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a dense, roundish crown; it can grow 6 - 8 metres tall. The crooked bole can be 30 - 40cm in diameter with a thick, soft, corky bark[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its edible fruit and its wood. A very attractive tree, it can be used in landscaping[].

Cultivation Details

Grows best in a sunny position[]. Found in the wild in well-drained, sandy soils[]. Established plants are drought tolerant[].
Young plants have a moderate rate of growth[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw. A sweetish tasting, fleshy pulp[]. The red to black, globose fruit is up to 8mm in diameter, containing a single seed[].

Other Uses

The wood is fine-textured, straight-grained, moderately heavy, hard, with moderate mechanical properties but not very durable. It is only used locally, as scantlings and laths in construction; and for simple furniture making[].
The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a sunny position in a nursery seedbed. A germination rate in excess of 50% can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 28 - 42 days[]. When the seedlings are 4 - 6cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 5 - 6 months later[].
