General Information

Escallonia bifida is a deciduous shrub or tree with a small, open crown; it can grow up to 5 metres tall. The crooked bole can be 15 - 25cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes used as a local source of fuel. A small, ornamental tree, it can be used for landscaping, especially in urban areas[].

The wood is medium-textured, irregular-grained, moderately heavy, susceptible to wood-eating organisms. It is generally too small to be used for anything other than fuel[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. Sow the tiny seeds onto the surface of the soil and then press them gently into the soil - when watering be careful not to wash them away. A low germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 40 - 60 days[].
