General Information

Dysoxylum gaudichaudianum is a large canopy tree growing up to 36 metres tall. It has a straight, cylindrical to slightly fluted bole that is up to 80 cm in diameter with buttresses up to 2.5 metres tall[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for timber and local medicinal use.

The medicinal use of the bark is reported to have killed two people in Papua New Guinea[].

Habitat

Primary and secondary forest including swamp forest, bamboo woodlands and forests on limestone, at elevations up to 1,800 metres[]. Well developed rain forest to 300 metres, but probably at its best in gallery forest on river flats[].

Medicinal

The bark is antitussive, emetic, emmenagogue and febriguge[]. A decoction of the fresh bark is used to treat coughs[]. The finely powdered bark, with water, is used as a safe emetic; combined with wine it is used to promote the flow of menses[, ]. The stem bark, combined with the stem bark of Dysoxylum bijugum and Pandanus spp., plus the twigs of Terminalia catappa, is used as a treatment for ciguatera - a type of food poisoning that can be caused by eating fish[].
The juice of the bark is applied externally as an astringent dressing[].

The leaves are abortifacient, emmenagogue and parturient[]. The juice of 10 leaves, mixed with water, is drunk to facilitate childbirth[, ]. Twelve dried leaves are used to make a strong tea that is used to promote an abortion[, ].

Other Uses

An infusion (of the bark?[]) is said to be piscicidal and insecticidal[].

A minor timber tree[]. A useful, general purpose timber[]. Freshly cut wood has a variable aroma, sometimes faint and resembling that of shallots (Allium ascalonicum) or beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)[].
