Croton sousae has a very small range, being restricted to the state of Veracruz in Mexico. Habitat destruction is the main threat for the taxon with many areas that are being cleared for agricultural-livestock activities. A high percentage of the original rainforest here has already disappeared and the conservation and restoration of all the remaining rainforest fragments are necessary to effectively preserve the plant diversity. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[
