This species is closely related to Combretum schumannii, and is included as a synonym of that species by some authors[]. One clear difference is that this species is never more than a shrub, whilst C. Schumannii is a much larger species and is usually tree-like in form[].

Combretum engleri is a shrub with dense foliage, producing numerous stems from an underground, clumping rootstock. It can grow up to 5 metres tall but is more likely to be around 2 metres[, ].
The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its wood and edible gum.
