A plant of the arid tropics and subtropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,200 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 30 - 42°c, but can tolerate 5 - 48°c[
]. Mature plants can be killed by temperatures of -5°c or lower, but young growth can be badly damaged at -1°c[
]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 300 - 600mm, but tolerates 150 - 750mm[

]. Succeeds in alkaline, sandy and gravelly soils, thriving on shallow, hard soils and rocky outcrops[
