General Information

Buchanania obovata is a deciduous shrub or tree growing from 1 - 15 metres tall[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and a medicine.
Buchanania obovata has a very wide distribution, large population, is not currently experiencing any major threats and no significant future threats have been identified. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2019)[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. The green fruits are about the size of grapes and hang in clusters[]. Fruit quality is variable, the best forms fruit heavily and have a nice flavour[]. The fruit can be harvested by gently shaking the tree which will cause the ripe fruits to fall to the ground[].

Medicinal

Minced leaves have been placed in tooth cavities to prevent pain[].
An infusion of the inner bark and sapwood is gargled (but not swallowed) as a treatment for toothache[]. The pure infusion can also bu used to bathe sore eyes[].
