General Information

Stahlia monosperma is an evergreen tree; it usually grows from 7 - 15 metres tall, but can reach 20 metres. The bole can be 30 - 45cm in diameter, occasionally reaching 100cm. Trees in the wild are usually small because most of the larger trees have been cut down[, ].
A valuable wood, it has been commonly harvested from the wild for local use.
The species has become extremely rare throughout its range as a result of over-exploitation of its wood. In Puerto Rico fewer than 20 trees are thought to exist in Boqueron and Sabana Grande. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(1998)[].

Cultivation Details

The seedpods have a pleasant aroma of ripe apples, though their flesh is tasteless[].
Although many species within the family Fabaceae have a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, this species is said to be devoid of such a relationship and therefore does not fix atmospheric nitrogen[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is dark brown; the sapwood light brown. The wood is very hard, heavy, strong, durable, and resistant to attack by drywood termites. Suitable for furniture, although it is considered somewhat hard for this purpose. It was mostly used for construction in the past when more trees were available.
