This species used to be considered as ranging from Somalia to Mozambique, but it has recently (2007) been shown to comprise of two closely related but distinct species. Cola clavata is now considered to be endemic to Mozambique, whilst Cola pseudoclavata Cheek, is considered to range from Tanzania north to Somalia[
