General Information

Sphagneticola calendulacea is a slender, spreading, herbaceous perennial plant, producing stems 50 - 80cm long that lie along the ground, ascending at their tips. The stems produce roots at their lower nodes[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local medicinal use and to purify water.

Medicinal

The plant is mainly used for the treatment of inflammations, including abscesses and sore throat; it is also used to treat coughs[]. TIle whole plant, except for the roots, is well known for its antibacterial, demulcent and antifebrile properties[]. It is used in the treatment of phlegmon, boils, impetigo, mastitis, abscesses, cystitis, cold and eruptive fever[].
A decoction of the fresh plant is used for bathing babies to prevent lichen tropicus (a chronic inflammatory and immune mediated disease that affects the skin, nails, hair, and mucous membranes)[]. The fresh plant, combined with sesame oil, is used to treat elephantiasis[].

Other Uses

The leaves are used for purifying water[].
