Viburnum cylindricum is an evergreen shrub or small tree; it usually grows up to 8 metres tall, exceptionally reaching 15 metres. In cultivation it is likely to be no more than 5 metres tall[, ]

Cultivation Details

Viburnum cylindricum has a range extending from the warm temperate regions of China and India (where it can be found at elevations up to 3,300 metres) to the tropical regions of Malaysia and Indonesia (usually at elevations in excess of 1,000 metres)[, ]. Selected provenances from the north of its range can tolerate considerable frost and are suitable for growing in the temperate zone, whilst provenances from the south are more suited to the tropics.
An easily grown plant, succeeding in most soils but ill-adapted for poor soils and dry situations[]. Prefers a deep rich loamy soil in sun or semi-shade[, ]. Best if given shade from the early morning sun in spring[].
Plants are self-incompatible and need to grow close to a genetically distinct plant in the same species in order to produce fruit and fertile seed[, ].
The flowers are sweetly scented[].

Edible Uses

An edible oil is obtained from the seed[, , , ]. It is used for cooking[].

Medicinal

The oil from the seed is used to soothe itchy skin[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown in a nursery seedbed as soon as it is ripe. Germination can be slow, sometimes taking more than 18 months. Stored seed will require 2 months warm then 3 months cold stratification and can still take 18 months to germinate[].
