General Information

Vernonanthura discolor is a semideciduous tree with an open, oblong crown; it can grow 10 - 15 metres tall. The short, straight, cylindrical bole can be 30 - 50cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for its wood, which is used locally. It is also used as a pioneer in reforestation schemes.

A fast-growing tree, it is an excellent species for use in reforestation projects for restoring native woodland[].

Other Uses

The heartwood and sapwood are not clearly differentiated. The wood is medium-textured, light in weight, soft, of low durability, easy to work. It is only used for low value items such as boxes, soles of clogs and the heels of shoes[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A low germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within 15 - 25 days[]. When the seedlings are 3 - 5cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 5 months later[].
The seed has a viability of less than 3 months in storage[].
