General Information

Vantanea compacta is an evergreen tree with a large, dense, globose crown; it can grow 10 - 25 metres tall. The more or less crooked, cylindrical bole can be 40 - 80cm in diameter with a thick bark[]. The tree is at its largest in the dense forest, in open ground it is much smaller and the crown is much lower[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its good quality timber. It provides an excellent shade and can be used for rural and urban tree planting[].

Often a canopy tree in the Atlantic rainforest, most commonly in the dense primary formations, favouring the tops of slopes where the soil is shallow and very well-drained[].

Other Uses

The wood is fine-textured, heavy, very hard, compact, with good mechanical properties and very durable. It is used in general construction for purposes such as scantlings, beams, laths, boards for floorings and linings and door jambs; for making furniture, window and door frames[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in individual containers. A low germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 60 - 90 days[].
