Cultivation Details

The wood and the leaves of this species, and several others in the genus Tynanthus, smell strongly of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and bear the Portuguese name 'cipo cravo' (cravol is clove in Portuguese). The smell of clove is largely due to the presence of the essential oil 'eugenol'. It is considered that the stronger the smell then the more eugenol is present; and the more eugenol there is then the more the plant will share the medicinal activities of eugenol[
