Common Name:

General Information

Triplaris gardneriana is a deciduous tree with a low, sparse, globose crown; it can grow 4 - 7 metres tall. The crooked bole branches from low down, it can be 20 - 30cm in diameter[].
The tree, especially the female form, is very ornamental when in flower and is used in landscaping projects[].

Habitat

Cultivation Details

A plant of mainly low elevations in the tropics, but found at elevations up to 1,600 metres in Peru.
Grows best in a sunny position[]. Prefers a moist to wet soil, tolerating seasonal inundation of the soil[].
A fast-growing plant, it can be 2.5 metres or more tall within 2 years from seed[].
The plant coppices easily and well, regrowing quickly from the base if cut down or damaged by fire[].

Agroforestry Uses:

A natural pioneer within the plants native range, it is fast-growing and can be used in reforestation plantings of native woodland, especially on the wetter soils, or to establish a woodland garden[, ].

Other Uses

The wood is of medium texture, straight-grained, moderately heavy, soft, with poor mechanical properties and of very low durability when exposed. It is easy to work, and only used locally for rustic construction[].
The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A germination rate in excess of 60% can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 7 - 14 days[].
