General Information

Triplaris caracasana is a slender, evergreen tree with an ovoid crown; it can grow up to 10 metres tall[]. The straight bole can be 35cm in diameter[].
The wood is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use.

Known Hazards

This tree is characterized by the presence of hosts of warlike, stinging ants, which inhabit the hollow branches and fall thick as rain on the intruder at their first contact with the trunk[].

A tree mainly of the lowland tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,000 metres.

The heartwood is yellow, tinged with red and turning darker with age, the thick band of sapwood is yellowish white[]. The wood is very hard, heavy, strong, tough, straight and fine-grained, taking a good polish[].
