General Information

Trichilia claussenii is a semideciduous tree growing 6 - 12 metres tall. The bole, which is often hollow, can be 20 - 30cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for its timber, which is used locally. An ornamental tree, its shape makes it particularly useful for planting in narrow streets[].

Habitat

Semideciduous, broadleaved forests, mainly in primary formations where it is found in moist soils of the alluvial plains, at the foot of hills, but also in stony soils at the tops of hills - where it can become a dominant species[].

Other Uses

The wood is straight-grained, light, compact, moderately resistant and durable[]. It is used for light cabinet making, internal finishing, construction, lathe work, carving etc[].

Propagation

Seed - do not remove the fleshy covering around the seed because it does not tolerate being dried, and has a short viability of up to 1 month[]. Sow the seed as soon as it is ripe, either in a nursery seedbed or in individual containers, choosing a position in light shade[]. The germination rate is usually low, with the seed sprouting within 30 - 40 days. The seedlings grow away slowly[].
