The stem is used as a purgative to cleanse the body in preparation for drinking the hallucinogenic Banisteriopsis potion. The vine is cut into sections that are then split lengthwise and steeped in water overnight. The infusion is taken upon awakening during the predawn hours of the same day that the Banisteriopsis ceremony is to be performed (the latter occurring after sunset)[
