Common Name:

General Information

Tibouchina arborea is an evergreen tree with a large crown; it can grow 10 - 20 metres tall. The cylindrical bole can be 30 - 40cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its low value wood. Very ornamental when in flower, it can be used in landscaping in parks and large gardens[].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, straight-grained, light in weight, easy to cut, with poor mechanical properties, not very durable and very susceptible to wood-eating organisms. It is only used for low value items such as anchor plates, moldings, window sashes and boxes[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed - surface sow the small seed and then gently firm it into the soil, being careful not to wash it away when watering. A low germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 40 - 60 days[].
