The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a food. This species has excellent potential as an ornamental, and is slowly gaining a place in horticulture. The new leaf growth, especially when growing in a sunny position, is a bright, purplish red, whilst selected forms produce masses of cream to yellow or brownish flowers, which attract birds, and are followed by bright pink or red fruits in profusion[
