General Information

Sorocea bonplandii is an evergreen tree with an open, oval crown; it can grow 6 - 12 metres tall. The usually straight and cylindrical bole can be 15 - 25cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of wood.

Cultivation Details

Succeeds in moderate to deep shade[]. Tolerant of a wide range of soil types[].
The tree is slow-growing, even when young[].
A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required.

Medicinal

A milky juice exuded from the trunk is anthelmintic[].

The bark is used in the treatment of ringworm[].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, straight-grained, moderately heavy, soft, flexible, with moderate mechanical properties and very susceptible to rot. Easy to work with, but only used locally for purposes such as tool handles and curved objects[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A moderate germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 30 - 40 days[]. When the seedlings are 5 - 6cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 5 - 7 months later[].
