General Information

Siparuna grandiflora is an evergreen shrub or a small tree growing from 2 - 10 metres tall. The bole is around 8cm in diameter[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine.
Siparuna grandiflora has a very wide distribution, large population, is not currently experiencing any major threats and no significant future threats have been identified. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2019)[].

Known Hazards

The plant is said to be poisonous and to be used by some native peoples to commit suicide[].

Cultivation Details

All parts of the plant are aromatic. The fruits have a strong lemon-like smell[].
A dioecious species, both male and female forms must be grown if fruit and seed are required.

Medicinal

Traditional healers use various Siparuna species, including this one, to treat malaria and as a febrifuge. For this use, the macerated leaves are boiled in water to prepare baths against fever, colds,and rheumatism[].

The plant contains various alkaloids, especially especially aporphines, and particularly liriodenine. Liriodenine has been shown to act as a sedative on the central nervous system[].
Crude leaf extracts have been shown to possess antiplasmodial activity[].
