General Information

Sideroxylon capiri tempisque is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 35 metres tall, usually with a large, broad crown. The bole is usually short, it can be up to 120cm in diameter with stout, simple buttresses up to 250cm high. The plant is leafless for a few weeks in the dry season[, ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and source of wood.

Fruit - raw[]. Poor in flavour with a scant flesh[]. The yellowish, oval or ovoid fruit is 30 - 40mm, long, 20 - 25mm wide, containing a single large seed[].

The wood is lemon to orange, its lustre medium; taste somewhat bitter; very hard, heavy, tough, and strong; specific gravity about 1.05, the weight about 66 pounds per cubic foot; texture medium, the grain straight to variable; not easy to work but finishes smoothly; durability fair. It is not exported, but is used locally for railroad ties, sugar mill machinery, and general construction[].
The wood is valued for fuel because it burns for a long time[]
