Schinopsis brasiliensis is a spiny, deciduous tree with an open, globose crown; usually growing 10 - 12 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 50 - 60cm in diameter with a thick, rough bark. The branches bear strong spines up to 35mm long[

Other Uses
The heartwood is a light reddish-brown; the sapwood is yellowish-white. The texture is fine; the grain interlocked; the taste is astringent, there is no distinctive aroma. The wood is very heavy, hard, very durable in contact with the soil. It can be hard to work, having a high blunting effect upon tools; it planes well when cut with an angle of 15°; sands, bores and turns well and can be worked to a good finish. It is especially valued for outdoor work, being used for fencing posts, telegraph poles, railway sleepers, wooden bridges etc., as well as for construction, general carpentry, lathe work etc[
