General Information

Sarcomphalus glaziovii is a semideciduous tree with a rounded, slightly dense crown; it can grow 12 - 30 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 30 - 50cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its wood.

Edible Uses

The fruit has a thin layer of fleshy pulp[]. The violet-black, subglobose berry is up to 18mm in diameter, containing a single large seed[]. This report says that the fruit is much sought by birds, but does not say it is edible for humans. Many members of this genus, however, yield an edible fruit and it is quite likely that this could also be eaten[].

The wood is medium-textured, straight-grained, moderately heavy, with average resistance to wood-eating organisms. It can be used for general construction, including beams and scantlings, as well as for lumber[].

Propagation

Seed (or the partially dried fruits) - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A low germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within 60 - 80 days[].
