The range of this species is restricted to northeast India and northern Myanmar. Any reports for it growing in southern China (Yunnan) should be ascribed to Salacca griffithii A.J.Hend.[].

Salacca secunda is a spiny, clump forming, evergreen palm growing from short, subterranean stems; each stem is topped by a crown of 6 - 20 large leaves that can each be up to 4 metres long including the petiole[].
The plant is commonly used as a source of materials for thatching roofs.
