General Information

Qualea dichotoma is a deciduous tree with an ellipsoid crown; it can grow 10 - 18 metres tall. The bole is slightly fluted, 40 - 50cm in diameter with a thick, corky bark[].
He tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for its wood, which is used locally. A very ornamental plant, it can be used in landscaping, street planting, gardens etc[].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, moderately heavy, soft, with poor mechanical properties and of low durability when exposed to the elements. It is used to make low value items such as boards, furniture structures, toys, boxes etc[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a semi-shaded position in individual containers. A germination rate of less than 20% can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 25 - 50 days[]. The seedlings resent root disturbance and so should be grown on in their pots until ready to plant out, which could be almost a year[].
