General Information

Psidium oblongatum is a deciduous shrub or small tree with an open and irregular crown; it can grow 3 - 4 metres tall. The crooked bole can be 15 - 25cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild as a local source of food and wood, It is recommended for home gardens and urban landscaping.

Cultivation Details

Succeeds in full sun and in dappled shade[]. Plants can tolerate seasonal inundation of the soil[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw. A sweet, acidulous pulp[]. The green, pear-shaped fruit can be 10cm long and 8cm wide, containing several small, hard seeds[].

The wood is fine-textured, irregular-grained, heavy, hard to cut, slightly susceptible to wood-eating organisms. Because of its small dimensions, it is used only for items such as cart poles and stakes[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A germination rate of almost 100% can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 40 - 60 days[].
