The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food.
The range of Prunus zinggii covers a large area from northern to central Mexico, but the species is very uncommon within that range and it is believd that there are less than 2,500 mature individuals. Habitat quality is declining due to urban expansion, mining, logging and grazing, which have also caused direct mortality to the species. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2021)[
