General Information

Pritchardia pacifica is an evergreen, single-stemmed palm tree, which usually grows up to 10 metres tall, occasionally reaching 15 metres. The unbranched stem is up to 30cm in diameter, topped by a crown of fan-shaped leaves up to 120cm wide on stems 100cm long[].
The leaves have been harvested from the wild for use as fans, whilst the stems have been used as ridge beams. The plant is much grown in ornamental gardens[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of the tropical dry forest with mean monthly temperatures ranging from 22 - 28°c. The mean annual rainfall is around 1,800mm, with most falling during the warmer months and almost drought conditions prevailing during the cooler months[]. The plant can also be cultivated in subtropical regions, though it will not grow in temperate climates and is marginal where winter temperatures go below 5°c[, ].
Grows best in moderate to full sun[]. Succeeds in a range of moist but well-drained soils[, ]. Requires a position sheltered from drying winds[].
