General Information

Priogymnanthus hasslerianus is a deciduous tree with a sparse, oval crown; it can grow 10 - 20 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be unbranched for up to half the tree's height and 40 - 80cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood. An ornamental plant, it can be used in landscaping[].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, cross-grained, heavy. with moderate mechanical properties and more or less resistant to insect attack. The surface of the wood can be as smooth as glass. It is used for furniture making and for internal purposes in general construction[].
The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed or in individual containers. A germination rate in excess of 40% can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 30 - 40 days[]. When the seedbed-sown seedlings are 5 - 6cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 6 - 7 months later[].
