General Information

Poupartia silvatica is a deciduous tree, usually growing 12 - 20 metres tall but with specimens up to 30 metres recorded. The bole is usually straight, up to 60cm, occasionally to 100cm in diameter[, ].
The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a food and source of wood.

Cultivation Details

Growth is rather slow - an annual growth rate of seedlings of 25cm has been recorded[].
A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. The fleshy pulp is occasionally eaten[]. The yellowish to orange fruit is an ovoid drupe around 25mm long and 20mm wide[].

The wood is white to pale grey. The grain is straight, texture medium. The wood is light in weight; not durable, although in tests it showed fair resistance to fungal attacks. It is quite easy to impregnate with preservatives. Once dry it is stable in service. It works easily and finishes well. It is . The wood is sometimes used for construction, and for knife handles. It is also suitable for the production of veneer, plywood and particle board, and for panelling, light boxes and crates[].

Seeds can be collected around February below the trees. The germination rate is about 50%. The seed still showed fair germination rates after 2 years of storage. Fruits should be dried for 4–5 days before storage. Seedlings are ready for planting into the field after 12 months, but the survival rate is often low[].
