General Information

Polyscias murrayi is a small, evergreen tree growing up to about 25 metres tall[]. Young trees are unbranched with a large, tuft-like crown of compound, pinnate leaves up to 1.5 metres long at the top of the slender stem[]. Older trees are sparingly or moderately branched[].
A gum resin obtained from the tree is used locally. A fast-growing species, it can be used in reforestation projects[].

Agroforestry Uses:

A very fast-growing pioneer species in its native habitat[]. The plant is a reliable producer of fruit, which is eaten by birds, who thus spread the seeds and ensure that there is seed in the ground just waiting to germinate if an opening in the canopy occurs[].

Other Uses

A gum is obtained from the tree[]. Containing 85% arabin, it has been recommended as a substitute for gum arabic (Acacia spp.)[]. The resin that exudes from damaged parts of the bark can be made into a cement by alternately heating and pounding it[].
