General Information

Jaboticaba branca is a semi-deciduous small tree with a short, crooked bole and dense, pyramidal crown; it can grow 2 - 7 metres tall[, ].
The edible fruit is greatly appreciated locally[, ]. Not very common in the wild, the tree is often cultivated for its fruit in domestic orchards in southern Brazil[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of the moist, tropical lowlands, where it is found at elevations up to 400 metres[].
Succeeds in full sun to moderate shade[]. Plants can tolerate occasional inundation[].
Newly planted young trees are quite slow to establish and grow away[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A succulent, sweet, pleasant-tasting pulp[, ]. The fruit is about 25mm in diameter[].

Other Uses

The wood is straight-grained, coarse-textured, moderately heavy with little resistance to wood-eating organisms[]. It is only used for fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a short viability and so is best sown as soon as it is ripe. Sow in a semi-shaded position in a nursery seedbed. Germination rate, even of fresh seed, is usually below 50%, with the seed sprouting within 25 - 35 days[]. The seedlings grow quite slowly[].
