This species is not universally accepted. It is sometimes seen as no more than a synonym for Pisonia zapallo Griseb.[].

General Information

Pisonia ambigua is an evergreen tree with a wide, dense, globose crown; it can grow 5 - 18 metres tall. The short, branched bole can be 40 - 60cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its wood. It provides an excellent shade and can be used in urban landscaping, parks, large gardens etc[].

Cultivation Details

Succeeds in full sun to fairly dense shade[]. Grows best in the more fertile, moist soils of alluvial valleys etc[]. Tolerant of poorly drained soils[].
Young plants have a moderate rate of growth[].
The seeds have glandular hairs which cause them to stick to animal fur and thus be dispersed, often far from the parent tree[].

Other Uses

The wood is thick-textured, cross-grained, light in weight, soft, with poor mechanical properties and not very durable. Easy to work with, but of low quality, it is only used locally to make low value items such as boxes and toys[].

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A moderate germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within a few weeks[].
