General Information

Pinanga crassipes is a single stemmed, evergreen palm with a very short, but quite thick, unbranched stem to about 70mm in diameter. Older plants form a short trunk and are topped with a crown of delicately pinnate leaves.
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a source of a masticatory and various materials.

Cultivation Details

Pinanga crassipes is a tropical lowland plant requiring high humidity and a minimum temperature of 20°c for good growth.
A shade-loving plant, it prefers rich but well-drained soil that is slightly acidic

Edible Uses

The seeds are sometimes chewed as a substitute for betel nut (Areca catechu)[
