Pilosocereus purpusii is a spiny, succulent shrubby cactus with an erect, cylindrical stem around 4 - 5 cm in diameter; it grows around 2 - 3 metres tall. The plant sometimes only produces a single, unbranched stem, but is usually branched basally, sometimes also laterally[
